Freixenet, more than 100 years of family tradition, excellence and commitment to the territory

The origin of Freixenet began to be written more than a century ago, with the union of two families, the Ferrers, from Sant Quintí de Mediona, and the Salas, from Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. After getting married, Pere Ferrer and Dolors Sala decided to refound the family business and start making cava.

Always bet on innovation prioritizing quality and seeking to satisfy the needs and tastes of consumers. This has been the philosophy that has accompanied Freixenet since its origins. The excellence of its products is the result of extensive experience and family winemaking tradition, but also of the brand’s firm commitment to quality and sustainable, technological and scientific development with an extraordinary team of professionals.

One of the keys to success is that Freixenet has its own yeast cultures with exceptional oenological properties to produce its renowned cavas. These unique yeasts were selected in their day by the co-founder and winemaker of the company, Dolors Sala, and the continuity of their work has been maintained for decades, thanks to scientific research and the dedication of the oenology team. The yeasts provide a bouquet and unique aromas to Freixenet cavas, thus achieving its own seal.

Freixenet’s vocation has been, since its origins, innovation, prioritizing quality and seeking to satisfy the needs and tastes of consumers.

For decades, Freixenet has made a strong commitment to sustainability and the development of a leading technology, while maintaining the essence of the traditional method. In this sense, the company was a pioneer, in the seventies, introducing fermentation at controlled temperature in large stainless steel tanks (600,000 liters) during the first fermentation and using pneumatic presses. These innovations meant a great improvement in the quality of the winery’s cavas, which later became widespread throughout the sector.

In the 90s and 2000s, the company developed a cutting-edge, pioneering and proprietary robotic technology, which allowed the automation and standardization of the elaboration process, obtaining great efficiency and sustainability and applying the highest quality standards. All this has been possible thanks to a great team of prestigious professionals, highly qualified in the international arena, from winemakers and cellar masters to sommeliers and quality technicians. Precision, rigor, commitment, love for the territory and respect for the environment are the team’s badges.

The sum of these efforts has made it the brand most chosen by consumers and a true benchmark worldwide, where Freixenet is synonymous with cava and celebration.

Gold and silver medals at the Vinari Awards

Among the most recent successes of the brand are those achieved in the prestigious Vinari Awards. These awards, which have the greatest impact in the Catalan wine world, are ten years fully consolidated as a contest that aims to recognize and at the same time serve as a speaker of the quality of the wines made in Catalonia.

In the last edition of the Awards, Freixenet won the outstanding Vinari d’Or Award, with the Elyssia Gran Cuvée. This sophisticated straw-yellow cava with greenish edges, made from chardonnay, macabeo, parellada and black pinot, is characterized by its fine bubble and pleasant aromas of acacia flower and honey, which are distinguished in an elegant background of ripe fruits, such as pineapple and peach. It is a very versatile cava, ideal for pairing with sea appetizers and fish in green sauce, but also with soft cheeses. The Elyssia range of cavas has also recently released a modern, simple and elegant image.

The jury of the awards also wanted to recognize with the Vinari de Plata two other products of the house: on the one hand, the iconic and universal cava Freixenet Cordón Negro Brut, which stands out for its fruity, light and fresh character; and, on the other, the aromatic Freixenet Selección Especial Blanc wine, which conquers palates with a marked Mediterranean and refreshing character.
