Spanish citizens are the ones who most want to celebrate Christmas with 74% according to an international study
- For the third consecutive year, Henkell Freixenet and YouGov carry out an international survey under the slogan “Celebrate life” with the participation of more than 7,544 people from Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- 82% of Spaniards want to celebrate Christmas with their family and friends
- The majority of Spaniards (56%) will toast the New Year with cava
Spanish citizens are the ones who most want to celebrate Christmas (74%) and will celebrate it mostly with family and friends (82%) according to the study carried out by YouGov and Henkell Freixenet, the world’s leading group of sparkling wines. The survey has had the participation of more than 7,500 people -Germany (2,126), France (1,018), Spain (1,070), the United Kingdom (2,129) and the United States (1,201) – and has focused on the celebration of the life, Christmas and the effect of the complex socioeconomic situation marked by the war in Ukraine and inflation. In this sense, the Spanish have been optimistic about the New Year, resulting in a notable improvement in the “Celebrate Life” index, which scales from 4.6 to 4.8, a figure that is above the international average (4.3).
To celebrate Christmas
The effects of inflation and the war in the Ukraine are two factors that could determine how Christmas will be celebrated. In the data provided by the study, it is striking that only a minority in the countries surveyed consider that these factors will not allow them to celebrate Christmas normally. In the case of Spain, only 27% of citizens share this opinion.
Likewise, 48% of those interviewed internationally want to celebrate Christmas, and 67% would like to celebrate Christmas as usual. In this case, the highest index is once again for the Spanish, since 74% affirm that they would like to celebrate this festive period as they usually do. For the participants, the company of family and friends at this time is one of the most relevant aspects, and 82% of Spaniards agree with this statement.
Cava to toast at Christmas parties
As far as New Year’s Eve is concerned, the minority (23%) of citizens consider that the existing situation will spoil the last night of the year -compared to 41% in 2020 with the effect of the pandemic-. In the case of Spaniards, only 28% agree with this statement.
This year, 58% plan to celebrate New Year’s Eve with their partner -64% in the case of Spaniards-, and 46% will welcome 2023 with a glass of sparkling wine, a figure that includes 8 % of non-alcoholic sparkling wine consumers. In the case of Spain, 56% of those interviewed will toast the New Year with cava, while 10% will celebrate it with non-alcoholic sparkling wine.
Celebrate the small and big moments of life
The survey prepared by Henkell Freixenet and YouGov once again puts the focus on the celebration of life and the complexity of the current situation, and how it has affected people’s daily lives. Globally, all participants agree that 2022 has been better than 2021 (59%) and the importance of spending time with family and friends (56%), as well as spending quality time with oneself (47%). In the case of Spaniards, these data correspond to 60%, 56% and 50% respectively.
Enjoying good gastronomy is another fundamental aspect for 46% of Spaniards (41% internationally), as well as spending time as a couple, important for 42% of Spaniards (35% internationally).
As can be seen, there is an aura of optimism despite the global context that has marked the year 2022, since 55% of the participants believe that 2023 will be a good year. Again, 75% of Spaniards are especially excited about the New Year, followed by the French (57%), the Americans (56%), the British (53%) and the Germans (44%).
