Can Sala Cava, made by Vins Família Ferrer, and distributed in some markets by the world’s leading cava company Freixenet Group, has been named as the best sparkling wine of 2020 by the prestigious British publication The Drinks Business. Furthermore, given the high marks awarded by the tasting panel, Can Sala Cava was given the top award possible, Sparkling Wine Master, which no sparkling wine achieved the previous year.

The Global Sparkling Wine Masters Panel, formed of Patrick Schmitt M.W., Michelle Cherutti-Kowal M.W. and Simon Field M.W., were impressed by “the depth of flavour of Can Sala and its layers of complementary characteristics”. Over two days of evaluating hundreds of samples of sparkling wine from around the world, the members of the panel awarded Can Sala the highest marks of all, and considered it to be the perfect example of the potential and quality of Cava. The competition is organised by The Drinks Business, the world’s leading drinks sector magazine, with more than 6 million individual visitors to its website in 2019.

A unique Cava

Can Sala Brut Nature 2008 is produced in the historic winery of the Ferrer family, the originators of the Freixenet brand, which is the world leader in Cava today both in quantity and quality. It is a Gran Reserva which ages for almost 12 years on lees and it is made from meticulously selected Parellada and Xarel.lo grapes from Casa Sala, the family estate at Sant Quintí de Mediona. The grapes are hand picked and pressed in the Bodega’s original wooden press, which is over 125 years old.

It is a Cava of intense yellow colour, reflecting its seven years ageing, and has a fine, elegant, persistent mousse. On the nose it is clean with hints of preserved fruits, alongside ripe fresh fruits, especially peach. It is long and full on the palate, and only 12.000 bottles are produced in the finest vintages, a true “millésime”.

Qualified Single Estate Cava

In addition, Can Sala was one of the first twelve Cavas awarded the designation “Cava de Paraje Calificado” (Qualified Single Estate Cava) by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and the Environment. To gain the designation of “Cava de Paraje Calificado” the candidate Cavas must fulfil a series of very strict requirements: selected vineyards for its proved exceptional quality, minimum vineyard age of 10 years, hand harvesting and a maximum yield of 8,000 ha/kg. In addition, winemaking must be done within the premises, a minimum lees ageing period of 36 months, and undergo a qualifying tasting before release to market, all of which combine to produce a product of exceptional quality.
