The Freixenet Group, Repsol and Serveto start a pilot test with renewable fuel to reduce C02 emissions from transport by 85%

  • With this innovative pilot test, Freixenet Group pursues a double objective: to decarbonize the economy and implement circular economy models that reduce its environmental footprint
  • The project promoted by the energy multinational contemplates a four-month collaboration in which journeys will be made between Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Madrid

The Freixenet Group, world leader in cava, and the transport company Serveto participate in a pilot test led by the energy multinational Repsol to contribute to the decarbonization of goods transport through the use of renewable fuels, specifically, a second-generation biofuel whose first material is only oils from waste, such as used cooking oils. and that allows to reduce CO2 emissions by 85%. To guarantee the residual origin of this new fuel, all the certifications audited by a third party required by the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) of the European Union are available. Repsol is building the first advanced biofuels plant in the Iberian Peninsula in Cartagena (Region of Murcia), a project supported by the European Investment Bank. It will have a capacity of 250,000 tons per year.

In this pilot test, which includes a four-month collaboration period between the companies, Grupo Freixenet will travel between its headquarters, located in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Barcelona, and Madrid with Serveto trucks powered by Repsol renewable biofuel. By participating in this project, Grupo Freixenet pursues a double objective: to decarbonize the economy and to implement circular economy models that reduce its environmental footprint.

In this way, the company becomes the first company in the wine sector to participate in Repsol’s pilot test to use these new second-generation fuels within the framework of its mobility strategy focused on decarbonization, taking another step in its sustainability strategy and thus reiterating its firm commitment to the preservation of the environment and compliance with Objectives 7. 9, 12, 13 and 17 of Sustainable Development (SDGs).

The correct application of this pilot test allows CO2 emissions to be reduced by 85% with the current fleet of vehicles without the need to make changes to the engine. Their main advantage is that they can be used in any current vehicle and take advantage of existing distribution and refuelling infrastructures. In addition, it is a complementary measure to the electrification of vehicles.

In the words of Cristina Duran, Head of Logistics at Grupo Freixenet: “Carrying out a project of these characteristics with reference companies such as Repsol and Serveto is a step forward not only for Grupo Freixenet as a company strongly committed to sustainable transport and the environment, but for the Spanish business fabric, which is gradually adapting to a new reality marked by the objectives set out in the European Green Deal”.

In the words of Gloria Martí, Head of Sustainability and Environment: “This project has been a collaborative project between different departments that has allowed us to add knowledge. We know that the energy transition is one of the aspects that must mark our roadmap and has become fundamental for the correct development of our activity. Freixenet Group is a reference company at European level, our main market, therefore, sustainable mobility has become one of our priorities”.
